ABSTRACT
Australia was one of the parts of the Empire most susceptible to ideas and practices symbolizing the bond of empire. At the beginning of the twentieth century virtually the entire population (98 per cent) was Anglo-Celtic: they were either born in, or were descendants of migrants from, England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
