ABSTRACT

Lugones raises the question of how divisions between women who are members of different social groups can be overcome. To explore these issues Lugones develops the concept of a “world” and the concept of “world”-travelling. A “world” is a social universe that has a language and norms, within which many people approve of those norms, where many of the inhabitants have affectionate ties to one another, and which endows inhabitants with a common history and common knowledge. Each “world” constructs the individuals who are in it, including “outsiders,” in distinctive ways. Thus, “world”-travelling involves entering into different worlds and, as a result, undergoing changes in one’s identity.
