ABSTRACT
In the preceding pages we have read short quotations from the Hwa Yen Sūtra and some brief comments on them in hopes that readers could grasp a general picture of the realm of Totality. But to get a better and more complete view of the subject, one must read the entire text of the Sūtra itself. Unfortunately, this is hardly possible at the present time because the voluminous text of the Hwa Yen Sūtra has not been translated into any European language. To remedy the situation as circumstances allow, one of the most important chapters of the Sūtra, "The Great Vows of Samantabhadra" (Taisho 293, pp. 844—46), is given here in translation. In my opinion, this chapter may well be regarded as the spiritual core of Hwa Yen Buddhism, and readers are advised to refer to it on page 187.
