ABSTRACT

In China, the Hwa Yen School of Buddhism is also called Hsien Shou Tsung (the School of Hsien Shou). Hsien Shou is another given name of Master Fa Tsang who was generally regarded as the most important master of this school. It was Fa Tsang who firmly established the foundation of Hwa Yen Buddhism through his multifarious writings on the Doctrine. I have selected two of his famous essays for our study here. The first is his exegesis of the Heart Sūtra, and the second, his famous work On The Golden Lion.
