ABSTRACT
The Mende inhabit a fairly compact area of nearly 12,000 square miles in the central and eastern part of the Sierra Leone Protectorate which itself is some 26,000 square miles in extent. Mende country proper also includes the adjacent western corner of Liberia, so that a number of Mende people are outside British administration.
