ABSTRACT
The picture of Mende political organization presented in the previous chapter may help to understand the kind of system which has come into being since the British took over. In many ways, this is quite a different one. It is largely because British methods of colonization have been concerned in recent years, as in other parts of West Africa, more with the development of political institutions than any other aspect of native culture.
