ABSTRACT
Aconvenient way of understanding the general structure of Mende society is to consider the life of the ordinary individual. Each age has its special rôle. There are also rites de passage of varying degrees of significance, at birth itself, at puberty, at the birth of the first child, at widowhood, and at death.
