ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we review work on the impact of AIDS on individuals and households. In Chapter 6, some readers may have been surprised that there was a division of opinion on the macroeconomic impact of AIDS, with some authors suggesting that AIDS may lead to productivity improvements. It may equally surprise readers to see, in this chapter, that there is a similar difference of opinion in terms of the microeconomic impact of AIDS. While it is generally agreed that ill health will negatively affect the individual who suffers from it, there is no agreed view about the economic impact of mortality due to AIDS.
