ABSTRACT

Today, science increasingly proceeds as a struggle for the best statistics required for obtaining a good position in an academic field determined by quality assurance, benchmarking, and ranking. This concluding chapter will look into the changed role of the university in the context of the new regime of science, pointing out its effects on the evolution of knowledge. First of all, (1) the position of the university will be determined in the field of conflict between inner freedom and outer societal expectations. Afterwards, we will cover three main pillars of the new regime: (2) the audit university, (3) the entrepreneurial university, and (4) academic capitalism.
