“I like to point out that people very often confuse the idea that truth is subjective with the fact that truth is perishable. […] Historical evidence is in fact perishable. People can burn the archives, people can destroy the evidence. Or they can ruin the evidence in many, many, many, many, many ways. Adulterate it, so that it’s impossible ever to know what the evidence really was. And I think that’s true of many episodes in history.”
