ABSTRACT

In 2012 the Brazilian government reported the lowest annual deforestation rate since monitoring began 24 years ago (Brasil.gov.br 2012). The deforestation of the Brazilian Amazon has decreased steadily over recent years, not least due to pressure from a growing environmental and climate movement within civil society. However, Brazil simultaneously fell from rank 7 to rank 33 in the Germanwatch Climate Change Performance Index 2013 (Germanwatch and CAN Europe 2012); primarily because emissions due to deforestation were included in the index for the first time.
