ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the changes teachers perceived in the children during the study in terms of their motivation, engagement, persistence and strategy knowledge. It discusses the childrens and parents views communicated through interviews conducted throughout the study. Teachers observed a number of important changes in the children, which they linked to the kind of instruction they had provided in the classroom and which they had not observed in children in past. The words of Mem Fox, the Australian childrens author argues that children should have the constant good fortune of hearing great literature, beautifully delivered into the ear and from there into the heart and from the heart into the bones, teachers read aloud at least once a day outside of the 90 minutes for literacy. Designs for Change and noting the changes in the children, teachers observed that the study had also had a profound effect on them as individual teachers but also on the school as a community.
