Surveys Monteverdi’s hymn settings from “Ave maris stella” from the 1610 Vespers to the seven hymns from Selva morale e spirituale (1640–1). Draws connections between Monteverdi and Alessandro Grandi, Francesco Cavalli, Tarquinio Merula, Giovanni Rovetta, and Natale Monferrato.
