ABSTRACT

Our current notions about victorian sexuality are in a promising state of uncertainty. The traditional picture, composed in Victorian times and reinforced during the first thirty years of this century, is now beginning to break up. We are poised to ask new questions about Victorian sexual behavior and to explore new sources for answers. Probably there is much that we shall never know, for men, and women more so, do not leave masses of clear-cut information about intimate and important elements in their behavior, but we should be able to discard the condescending stereotype we currently use.
