ABSTRACT

The creation of a work of interactive entertainment is a totally human endeavor, of course, but it, too, begins with nothingness, and to successfully bring such a complex endeavor to fruition can almost seem miraculous. As a project moves through the development process, it evolves from a raw idea to a polished state where it is capable of being produced. During this preproduction phase, many projects require the input of subject matter experts (SMEs). The most frequently used forms of documentation and visual presentations are: flowcharts, the bible, the design document, and concept art. During a well-utilized preproduction period, a concept for an interactive work moves from an extremely rudimentary premise to a well-thought-out project that is detailed enough in every regard to be moved into production. A bible is an expanded version of a concept document, and it is strictly an in-house working document. Bibles are most frequently used for complex, story-rich projects.
