ABSTRACT

121All creative effort attempts to capture, codify and convey the most elusive things in life. Thoughts, emotions, fears, all so ephemeral and intangible, are nonetheless communicable through good art. Poetry achieves this in a small space of time, while a novel, a film or an opera has longer. In these times of constant sensory input, to the point of overload, a picture has to appeal to something in the viewer—their intellect, or their heart—immediately. You need to have an audience's attention before they will explore and contemplate the piece. Composition is the best means you have of creating an image with impact.
