ABSTRACT

Much of the focus in this book is on small culture formation – the immediacy of constructing culture on an everyday basis in the current moment. However, it needs to be acknowledged that constructing culture in the present can be infl uenced very much by the historical narratives which we bring to the situation. These are powerful narratives which are long-standing and implicit in the particular social and political structures of nation, religion and ideology, and the global position and politics that collect around them. We all draw on these historical narratives as cultural resources, and we carry them through our personal trajectories within everyday cultural engagement.
