ABSTRACT
Italy, in recent years, has been a veritable border country. In fact, it has become the border of the European Union, with an alternate influx of legal and illegal immigrants, who challenged the natural wall and the dangers of the Mediterranean Sea. Hundreds of people—men, women, and children, sometimes babies—lost their lives trying to reach the Italian coast, the first step on the continent in their long journey of hope.
