Violence against women is a major public health problem around the globe. The economic costs of violence against women – including medical and counselling costs, lost productivity, women’s refuges and justice system costs – run into the billions of dollars (WHO 2002), while the emotional, psychological and quality of life costs for women and children exposed to such violence are immeasurable.
