ABSTRACT

In this chapter we start to think about how children position themselves in different contexts and play the roles assigned to them within these contexts. In order to play a role in society the child has to understand whether she does or does not fit into the group. So she will have to explore who she is in relation to others. Is she the youngest or the oldest in the family; an only child or one with siblings; a boy or a girl; black or white; sharing a language with the group?
