ABSTRACT
Shakespeare’s Iago was the good servant who enabled his leader’s success until he realized there would be no reward-he would be taken for granted, and others would be preferred for promotion. Before the events in the play, Othello had been a great military leader, and Shakespeare makes it clear he depended on Iago-they had a close and trusting relationship. Othello promoted another, and the disillusioned Iago set in motion a campaign to convince the newly wedded Othello that his wife was unfaithful. For those who have not seen it, we will not give away the end of this famous play; suffice to say, it is a tragedy, for Othello, for Iago, and for others.
