ABSTRACT
The context within which research takes place will have an impact upon the scope of the research as well as the questions that are asked. For this reason it is important that beginning researchers are taught to examine critically the research of others. Students should be encouraged to think about issues such as the economic and time constraints; the political climate in which research takes place; the imperatives of fund holders and the role of gatekeepers.
