ABSTRACT

The limbic system is essential for managing a range of biologically determined and socially conditioned emotions that drive behaviour aimed at protecting our core values. These systems influence the selection of an appropriate persona (internal working model or ‘I’-position) from our repertoire of possibilities developed through life experience. Furthermore, through interpreting subtle clues regarding the internal mental processes of another person (mentalisation), the limbic system enables us to develop an awareness of the intentions of others. If we are sufficiently open to what is going on in our environment and have developed sufficient emotional intelligence through truly connecting with others, we will be able to refine our internal working models of the various personae in our repertoire in order to select behaviours optimally suited to the social/business circumstances we face and get the most out of productive working relationships.
