ABSTRACT

Change can take various forms, and initiatives around the globe provide us with lots of examples of how education for sustainable development finds its way into institutions of higher education. Bottom-up change, started by visionary individuals, in many cases has supplied a strong impetus, thanks to which the implementation of education for sustainable development has gained momentum. Recognition and involvement of leadership at the institutional level are required, however, to mainstream these initiatives and to effect a true systemic change. This brings in a top-down perspective which, in some cases, makes use of existing initiatives or introduces education for sustainable development as a new challenge and makes it part of the institution’s strategic planning.
