ABSTRACT

Governmentality offers powerful analytical concepts for researching contemporary educational governance and leadership practices. In this chapter, I illustrate the utility of a governmentality approach by featuring research case studies conducted in two government secondary schools in Melbourne, Australia. In doing so, I explore how forms of governance associated with marketization are mediated, rationalized and put into practice by school leaders and teachers, with a particular focus on how individuals govern themselves and others in relation to a broader climate of advanced liberal governance.
