ABSTRACT

Learners are often asked to read, comprehend, and learn material from textbooks, computers, the internet and a variety of other media. Students in general have difficulty reading and learning from text of various kinds. They have to learn, for instance, to read and comprehend internet-based text that is presented in extremely complex and interconnected ways. The discussions in this chapter will develop strategies to help students read and learn from informational texts primarily. However, there will be a short discussion of critical literacies and multiliteracies (see Chapter 1) as they relate to ESL (ELL) students. There are various terms that have been used to refer to reading relative to students and their particular literacy needs; these terms will be addressed first.
