ABSTRACT

Time constraints pose a twofold challenge for teachers: in order to maximise the given time for primary MFL, teachers need to focus firstly on the learning process and secondly on the most effective learning and learner strategies. In addition, pupils often know instinctively how they best learn, and develop their preferred learning styles. They are also aware of what they themselves find difficult to learn in primary MFL and describe as 'tricky bits'. Dialogue between teachers and pupils in the primary MFL classroom about learning and, when appropriate, on learning strategies, can lay the foundation for pupils to find and develop their own learning solutions and thus enhance the pupils' 'learning to learn' capability.
