ABSTRACT

The project builds the children’s capability to use information and communication technology to assemble and compose sounds which are then arranged in a sequence to accompany a live performance. The Sound Recorder program which is one of the accessories supplied with Windows does enable sound files (.wavs) to be inserted and overlaid to create sound pictures. The very simple appearance of the software, however, makes it hard for children to ‘see’ their composition. The clear appearance of the software and the ability to drag and drop sound files, trim them to length, blend one with another by overlaying them on the timeline and add your own recorded sounds too, makes the composition of sound pictures accessible to young learners. The initial activity needs a collection of sound files to be ready in the software for the children to explore. The sound files appear on the Collections screen as large blue notes and the children can hear them by double clicking on them.
