ABSTRACT

Concept cartoons have become an effective approach to teaching, learning and assessment in science since they were created by Brenda Keogh and Stuart Naylor in 1991. The children use a range of word-processing and formatting tools to present and communicate their understanding of scientific concepts by completing or creating their own cartoon. Children can add text to the cartoon and the file can still be used on the interactive whiteboard. The exploratory nature of wrestling with a scientific concept makes information and communication technology (ICT) a natural choice of tool to assist with the completion of concept cartoons. The real-life context provided by the cartoon’s scenario also brings a purpose to the development of ICT skills. Depending upon the extent to which the children become involved in the creation of the cartoon, different elements of the ICT KS1 Programmes of Study will be addressed.
