ABSTRACT

The type of graph can be selected by making choices in the dialogue box which appears. Careful selection of data and graph types can help to make patterns in children’s results very visual. By exploring alternatives and selecting the type of graph that will best display the data, they will begin to learn how to use the spreadsheet independently. Explaining and analysing what the graph means, making the connection with the numbers and the measurements that the numbers represent, will need to be modelled time and again for some children. Reading results to children so that they can focus on entering them and watching the graph grow will help. One of the ultimate goals in the development of information and communication technology capability is that children will select software to help them undertake tasks and solve problems. Activities of this kind help them to see the potential benefits of a spreadsheet in a supported way.
