ABSTRACT

The appropriate level of challenge is achieved for groups and individuals by handing over some or all of the creation of the spreadsheet. The prediction that there is a relationship between some element of hand measurement and other body measurements will need to be justified if the group are to go on to make an estimate of other dimensions of the ‘giant’. Older children can be expected to build a fuller picture of the appearance of the giant based on their measurements of the hand. Reducing the number of measurements through focusing on one relationship can help to support younger children. Children are often less likely to accept that a mistake has been made on a professional-looking graph. The initial discussions that explore the way that the children are going to proceed with collecting and presenting their evidence are very important.
