ABSTRACT

That the children use the branching data files as well as create them is a necessary part of the learning in this project. A branching database of the birds that visit the bird table, for example, would enable children to name the different species by answering a series of Yes/No questions. Once a complete file has been created and saved it can be opened and used as a key for other children to name the objects that have been classified in the branching database. The creation of the questions helps children to develop a vocabulary to name and classify the objects. If some children have difficulty describing the objects, more sorting games playing with the collection will help to introduce the necessary vocabulary. The subtle differences will also challenge the children’s vocabulary as the sorting questions will need to be precise.
