ABSTRACT

Inevitably, there are winners and losers, and it should be accepted that the core

subjects, the bigger departments, will have greater negotiating power. As we teach our

students, bigger is not necessarily better, but getting the true recognition for economics

and business can seem like an uphill battle at times. As an economics and business

studies NQT just arrived from a specialist PGCE there is obviously a great degree of

loyalty to the subjects and an interest in taking an active and decisive role in defending

and promoting them. The most effective strategy in raising the profile is to be the best

classroom practitioner that you can be. Enthusing students and gaining their

commitment and support will filter throughout the school and to parents. Building the

reputation of the subjects will pay off in the ways in which they are regarded by other

teachers and show itself in the ways in which students make their subject choices.
