ABSTRACT

Practitioners have reported using this model with various clients in diverse settings, including community mental health centers, state and private hospitals, private psychiatric practices, schools, and private psychotherapy practices (De Shazer, 1985). The potential mismatch between school counselors' training and the realities of counseling in schools can foster a feeling of inadequacy and frustration when trying to meet the needs of all students. School counselors often report that they are overwhelmed by a number of factors that limit their counseling effectiveness. These factors include heavy caseloads, inadequate resources, lack of staff development, and the evolving diversity among student populations with multiproblem families that leave students feeling powerless to effect significant change to debilitating situations. One viable counseling alternative is to integrate solution-focused brief counseling (SFBC) into their counseling repertoire.
