ABSTRACT

One important aspect of supervision is personal development. To be effective, counselors and psychotherapists must be comfortable with themselves and with intimacy, and they must understand the role of anxiety and conflict in relationships and have a genuine respect for individual differences. It is clear that a supervisee’s personal issues can affect client care. It is the ethical responsibility of the supervisor to assist the supervisee in uncovering these problem areas and to protect the client from any resulting harmful experiences. Ethical guidelines support the idea that it would be unethical not to challenge supervisees about issues that may interfere with quality care.
