ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to provide teachers and counselors with information and strategies for working with children and families who carry HIV disease. The particular scenario might be a child who is HIV-infected or a child whose parent or parents are HIV-infected. This chapter begins with a discussion of the HIV disease spectrum and how HIV may impact schools; later, matters of heath, behavior, and instruction for HIV-infected children appear along with issues surrounding HIV-impacted families. Next, we discuss issues important to teachers and counselors, counseling strategies, an exploration of death and dying issues, and cross-cultural implications. The chapter closes with a view of legal and ethical issues as well as universal health precautions. A list of resources and books for children about HIV can be found at the end of the chapter.
