ABSTRACT

Allen J. Ottens received his doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of Illinois. He was formerly assistant professor in the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine. University of Maryland School of Medicine. and staff psychologist in the Psychologieal Services Clinic. Cornell University. He also served as assistant director of the Counseling Center at Villanova University. Presently he is coordinator of student development programming at the Counseling and Student Development Center. Northern Illinois University. Dr. Ottens is a licensed psychologist and a member of the American Psychological Association. He is the author of numerous papers that have appeared in such publications as the Journal qf Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry and the Personnel and Guidance JournaL He has written two books for adolescents and young adults. Coping with AcademicAnxiety and Coping with Romantic Breakup. The latter book was recently recommended by the Committee on Books for Young Adults of the New York Public Library as having special appeal for this age group. Dr. Ottens' areas of professional interest include crisis intervention. cognitive therapy. research on academic anxiety. and student development.
