ABSTRACT

A major prerequisite for sexuality counseling is comfortable acceptance of one’s own sexuality and that of others, however different. In contrast to knowledge or skills, this combination of attitudes and experience is not usually acquired systematically. A person who has begun training must have already faced some confrontation with personal biases, however, and become aware of new sexual styles through involvement with others. One of the reasons for the learning exercises in this text is to encourage structured experience rather than abstract study. In spite of the importance of the subject, this chapter is brief, because one’s entire professional education involves the counselor as a person.
