ABSTRACT

Considering all the sexual activity which takes place in any given region in a 24 hour period, only a very small percentage results in pregnancy. However, the possibility of conception significantly affects many sexual interactions. A woman releases an average of 400 ova in her lifetime, men have millions of sperms in each ejaculation, and a heterosexual couple experiences 3,000 to 5,000 acts of intercourse in a lifetime. Not surprisingly, over the centuries the connection between sex and reproduction has resulted in many restrictive cultural attitudes, and the well recognized “double standard” for women and men.
