ABSTRACT

Cohen (1979; Cohen & Younger, this volume) makes the point that there has been a lack of communication between those working in the fields of infant perception and later cognitive development. Cohen and Younger's lucid review of research on perceptual categorization in infancy suggests that this line of investigation may shed as much light on cognition in older subjects as does the explicit study of children and adults. By working from the "bottom-up" Cohen and his colleagues have made strides in closing the gap between two areas that were becoming increasingly distinct.
