ABSTRACT

Alan Stone (introduced below) is a brilliant and scrupulous elder statesman of psychiatry and psychoanalysis; one with whose opinions I strongly differed here. I include this topical piece (published as "Alan Stone's Requiem for Psychoanalysis" in the May 1997 Psychiatric Times) less for the debate with Stone than for its capsule description of, and advocacy for, what I consider to be the essence of psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
