ABSTRACT
Many discussions of empathy either claim that it is the quintessential approach to analytic understanding or insist that it is so universal an approach that it requires little further comment. Other discussions either emphasize the validity of empathy as a tool for acquiring information about an analysand’s inner life or raise questions about subjectivity and bias.
