First and foremost is Freud's view of affects as universal, congenital, hysterical attacks.4 By this he means that all affects are reproductions of emotions originally generated by past traumatic experiences, vital to the organism, which possibly even antedate the individual existence of the person. These traumatic experiences are revived in situations similar to those in which they originally occurred.
