ABSTRACT

Much is known about the characteristics of families in which child abuse occurs and about the various injuries and behaviors of abused children. Less is known about the long-term consequences of abuse. The area that is best researched, largely because of several good population studies, is sexual abuse, the most recently recognized area in the spectrum of child abuse. This chapter will discuss some of the studies, looking at the consequences of physical abuse, neglect (including failure to thrive), and sexual abuse.
