ABSTRACT

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (dysmorphophobia) refers to the preoccupation with a defect in appearance based on a false conviction that a certain part of the body is ugly or deformed. The defect is either imagined entirely, or is minor, but exaggerated by the patient (DSM-IV, 1994). The preoccupation often causes significant distress or impairment in important aspects of the person's life, including social and occupational areas. Reassurances by medical personnel or others usually do not lead to any relief.
