Malingering may be defined as an act of deception in which the individual pretends to be ill for the purpose of attaining a secondary gain. Most often, the patient is trying to avoid work or to obtain certain compensation for being sick. This kind of behavior is most common in prisons and military settings where it is engaged in to secure a transfer into a better environment or to avoid certain responsibilities. It is also common following car accidents or workrelated injuries for the purpose of litigation to gain monetary compensation.
