ABSTRACT

If the person has not had any personal experience with hypnosis, then good questions to ask might include: Have you ever seen hypnosis demonstrated? Have you heard about hypnosis before? In what context? How have you heard hypnosis may be used? Do you know anyone personally who has experienced hypnosis? If so, how did he or she describe the experience? In asking some or all of these questions, you learn about the client's experiences and attitudes concerning hypnosis. Then misconceptions can be dealt with, unrealistic fears can be alleviated, and a positive belief system can be encouraged (Weitzenhoffer, 1957; Zilbergeld, 1986).
