ABSTRACT

Any parent of a child with an eating disorder is bound to have concerns about the future and what it holds for their child. In this chapter we describe what can happen and summarize current knowledge on which factors influence outcome. As there are differences between each of the eating disorders, we will discuss each in turn. However, it is important to be aware of the fact that recovery is likely to be gradual rather than sudden. Indeed, it can be a painfully slow process with many setbacks on the way. The associated frustrations can in themselves create problems and to avoid these you are likely to need the patience of a saint. However, if you apply the various principles outlined in earlier chapters your child will have a better chance of ultimately making a good recovery.
