ABSTRACT

The best and most popular series combined geographical exploration with aeronautical development, each new exploration requiring newer and more highly-developed aircraft. Of the nearly 35 series that appeared during the golden era of aviation series books, eight of them were specifically linked to aerial exploration and aeronautical development. These series tended to be the most ambitious in terms of scope, plot and development. Representative of these are John Prentice Langley's Aviation series (9 titles), L. P. Wyman's Hunniwell Boys series (8 titles), Edith Craine's Sky Buddies Series (8 titles), and Noel Sainsbury's Billy Smith Series (5 titles). The two best-known and most long-lived series in this vein were the Ted Scott series, written under the Stratemeyer pseudonym of "Franklin W. Dixon," and Eustace Adams's Andy Lane Series.
