REALISM HAS always had its critics.! The divide between realism and the theories these critics offer as an alternative--that is, theories ;which do not appeal to the international distribution of power to
explain state behavior-is not, however, as wide as the tone of the debate suggests. Partisans may disagree, but moderates of all persuasions can learn from one another.
